Composite bearings are used for sliding, rotating, swinging or reciprocating motions. Sliding applications are usually used as sliding bearings, bearing liners and wear-resistant plates. Sliding surfaces are usually flat, but they can also be cylindrical and always move in a straight line, not in a rotating motion. Rotating applications involve cylindrical surfaces and one or two moving directions. The applications of swing and reciprocating motion involve plane or cylindrical surfaces, moving in two directions.

Composite bearing structure can be solid or easy to install separation docking (rolled bearing). Bearing matching with application is very important. High load requires bearing to increase contact area and have high load carrying capacity. Compared with lubricating oil and grease lubricated bearings, solid lubricant bearings can be designed to operate at higher temperatures. High temperature applications require special lubrication measures to minimize heat accumulation and friction.
